Tango Melodica

Composed by Brandon Pozzo

Inspired by the Argentine tango, Tango Melodica is a short and fun small ensemble piece that reimagines the tango through the unique (and slightly quirky) voice of the melodica. Set against the backdrop of a dramatic string quintet, the melodica soloist takes the spotlight with flair, drama, and just a touch of absurdity.

A melodica is a free-reed instrument that is played by blowing air into a mouthpiece and pressing keys on a keyboard to produce notes. It is a relatively low-cost instrument that can be found at most music stores and is fun and easy for any music student to learn.

At its heart, Tango Melodica is about celebrating humor in music, and giving performers the chance to experiment with more dramatic expressions. The performers are encouraged to lean into the drama and quirkiness of the piece – don’t be afraid to be theatrical!
